OBJECTIVE:

To study the efficacy of yoga on pregnancy outcomes.

DESIGN AND SETTING:

Three hundred thirty five (335) women attending the antenatal clinic at Gunasheela Surgical and Maternity Hospital in Bangalore, India, were enrolled between 18 and 20 weeks of pregnancy in a prospective, matched, observational study; 169 women in the yoga group and 166 women in the control group.

METHODS:

Women were matched for age, parity, body weight, and Doppler velocimetry scores of umbilical and uterine arteries. Yoga practices, including physical postures, breathing, and meditation were practiced by the yoga group one hour daily, from the date of entry into the study until delivery. The control group walked 30 minutes twice a day (standard obstetric advice) during the study period. Compliance in both groups was ensured by frequent telephone calls and strict maintenance of an activity diary.

MAIN OUTCOMES:

Birth weight and gestational age at delivery were primary outcomes.

RESULTS:

The number of babies with birth weight > or = 2500 grams was significantly higher (p < 0.01) in the yoga group. Preterm labor was significantly lower (p < 0.0006) in the yoga group. Complications such as isolated intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) (p < 0.003) and pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) with associated IUGR (p < 0.025) were also significantly lower in the yoga group. There were no significant adverse effects noted in the yoga group.

CONCLUSIONS:

An integrated approach to yoga during pregnancy is safe. It improves birth weight, decreases preterm labor, and decreases IUGR either in isolation or associated with PIH, with no increased complications.

Headache Migraine – Yoga Cure

Headache is one of the most common complaints. It is a symptom and not a disease. There are various types of headache such as headache due to anxiety or tension headache, depression, alcoholism, constipation, migraine or sick headache or biliary headache.

Types of Headache

There are five types of headache:

  • vascular,
  • myogenic (muscle tension),
  • cervicogenic,
  • traction,
  • inflammatory.

Headache due to anxiety disturbs the sleep. Migraine is usually one-sided headache. It is repetitive and pulsating. Some diseases also lead to headache such as High blood pressure, allergy, epilepsy, fevers, liver, kidney and eye troubles. Sinus trouble, infection and inflammation. Toothache, various neuralgias and tension in the body also cause headache.  Trauma, meningitis, syphilis, cerebral tumors are the major causes of headache. Feeling of pain anywhere in the body is a function of the brain But headache does not mean pain in the brain.

Vascular

The most common type of vascular headache is migraine. Migraine headaches are usually characterized by severe pain on one or both sides of the head, an upset stomach, and, for some people, disturbed vision. It is more common in women. While vascular changes are evident during a migraine, the cause of the headache is neurologic, not vascular. After migraine, the most common type of vascular headache is the “toxic” headache produced by fever.

Other kinds of vascular headaches include cluster headaches, which cause repeated episodes of intense pain, and headaches resulting from high blood pressure (rare).

Muscular/myogenic headaches appear to involve the tightening or tensing of facial and neck muscles; they may radiate to the forehead. Tension headache is the most common form of myogenic headache.

Cervicogenic headaches originate from disorders of the neck, including the anatomical structures innervated by the cervical roots C1–C3. Cervical headache is often precipitated by neck movement and/or sustained awkward head positioning. It is often accompanied by restricted cervical range of motion, ipsilateral neck, shoulder, or arm pain of a rather vague non-radicular nature or, occasionally, arm pain of a radicular nature.

Traction and inflammatory headaches are symptoms of other disorders, ranging from stroke to sinus infection.

Specific types of headaches include

  • Tension headache
  • Migraine
  • Ictal headache
  • “Brain freeze” (also known as: ice cream headache)
  • Thunderclap headache
  • Vascular headache
  • Toxic headache
  • Coital cephalalgia (also known as: sex headache)
  • Sinus headache
  • Hemicrania continua
  • Rebound headache (also called medication overuse headache, abbreviated MOH)
  • Red Wine Headache

Like other types of pain, headaches can serve as warning signals of more serious disorders. This is particularly true for headaches caused by inflammation, including those related to meningitis as well as those resulting from diseases of the sinuses, spine, neck, ears and teeth.

Common Causes for headache

  • Chronic headaches are commonly due to Migraine
  • Tension, emotional stress, depression — Depression headache is associated occasionally with the focus of a somatic delusional system.
  • Intracranial injury, head injury, cervical spondylosis, dental or ocular disease, temporo- mandibular joint dysfunction, sinusitis, hypertension, and a wide variety of general medical disorders.
  • Alcoholism — alcohol is toxic to tissues, directly initiates the meanings and causes the cerebral pain.
  • Constipation — due to absorption of toxic products in the circulatory system.  constipation sometimes causes temporary loss of plasma into the wall of the gut, and the resulting poor flow of blood to the head could be the cause of the headache.

Yogic Treatment for Headache

Some forms of headache, such as migraine, may be amenable to preventative treatment.

The patients suffering from headache have to do three things:

  • Regular practice of selected yoga asanas, pranayama,
  • Proper diet,
  • Avoid the things which strain the nerves.

selected yoga asanas

Beside the above mentioned asana and pranayama practice of yoga nidra, concentration and meditation gives the best result.

Tension headaches, also categorized as muscle contraction, often can be alleviated through deep breathing and relaxation, especially in a lying down position in a quiet place.

Inverted postures increase oxygen to the brain and can reduce headache-causing strain.

A regular routine of Yoga exercises, breathing techniques, and relaxation/meditation can help prevent chronic headaches or reduce their severity. Exercises that stretch your muscles can release the tension that often causes headaches.

Therapeutics Yoganidra

YogaNidra is a state of conscious Deep Sleep. YogaNidra brings an incredible calmness, quietness and clarity. It has great Therapeutics values.

Proper Diet

A balanced diet can also play a crucial role in preventing or treating headaches. Some headaches result from a missed meal or a lack of protein and can be alleviated by eating a healthy protein snack. Include fruits, green vegetables (salad), and pulses in meals.

The non-vegetarians can eat fish and liver with least amount of spices.

Drink a lot of water.

There are also some foods which are suspected of causing headaches, such as some nuts, aged cheeses, and chocolate, and foods containing nitrates or monosodium glutamate.

Smokers should stop smoking. Reduce the number of cups of coffee tea or stop it completely. You simply don’t need any external stimulants.

Blood Pressure High BP Hypertension Yoga Cure

Hypertension or high blood pressure, is the most common disease affecting the heart and blood vessels.

What is blood pressure?

Our heart beats 72 times in a minute. With each beating of heart about half a cup of blood is pumped into arteries.

Hyper means increased and tension means pressure. Hypertension means higher pressure of blood.

The circulatory system plays a vital role in the nourishment of tissues. Elements necessary for nourishment of tissues are carried to them by blood. After circulating in the whole body, blood returns to get purified to the heart through the veins.

To complete above process needs pressure so, the pressure works in the process of blood circulation on so long a journey through all the arteries and veins is called as Blood Pressure. Variation in the blood pressure influences the homoeostasis.

During heart contraction blood pressure increases, known as ‘Systolic Blood Pressure’. During heart relaxation blood pressure reduces known, as ‘Diastolic Blood Pressure’.

Normal B.P. (in adult) 120/ 80 mm of mercury pressure. But when B.P. increases to 140/90 and above and remains at that level, then this increased Wood pressure is known as “Hypertension”

As a person grows older, generally blood pressure goes on increasing. As the contraction of arteries increases, the arteries lose elasticity.

Normally the reduction of arteriolar lumen increases the total peripheral resistance resulting in the hypertension. Hypertension causes a variety of problems and heart is affected badly. Heart has to work powerfully to pump the blood in the arteries. With time, however, changes in the organization and properties of myocardial cells occur. Due to unexpected pressure, fluids do not come out of the kidneys in required proportion, it decreases working capacity of kidneys. Toxic fluid in the form of urea gets collected in the blood. The chemical reaction that takes place thus raises possibilities of many a different types of defects in the body.

To combat this situation, kidneys secrete rennin, which further raises the blood pressure and aggravates the problem. The reduced blood supply to the kidney may lead to death of several kidney cells.

The presence of hypertension also enhances the development of atherosclerosis and heart attacks.  high B.P. damages the internal walls of the arteries. With increase in the level of cholesterol, triglycerides, phospholipids density of blood increases. It goes on sticking to the walls of the arteries. In such a condition severe strain is imposed on the cerebral arteries that supply the brain. This makes them weakened, which ultimately ruptures, causing brain haemorrhage.

Can person having B.P. practice yoga asanas (yoga posture)?

Yes, it is recommended to  practice Asanas except Shirsasan. All the Asanas can be practiced without any fear.

Menopause – Yoga Cure

Menopause  When a woman’s reproductive system slows down and eventually stops around the age of 50, this is called a menopause. Menopause occurs as the ovaries stop producing estrogen, causing the reproductive system to gradually shut down. Each and every one of the aged females has to pass through the period of menopause.

Menopause Symptoms

Heart palpitations
Dizziness
Uneasiness
Decreased sex drive
Feeling of vomiting
Sleeplessness
Headache
Excitement
Worries
Loss of concentration
Gloom
Pain in joints
Dryness of the skin

As the body adapts to the changing levels of natural hormones, vasomotor symptoms such as hot flashes and palpitations, psychological symptoms such as depression, anxiety, irritability, mood swings and lack of concentration, and atrophic symptoms such as vaginal dryness and urgency of urination appear. Together with these symptoms, the woman may also have increasingly erratic menstrual periods. The clinical features of menopause are caused by lessening amounts of estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone in the woman’s body.

Menopause-Vasomotor instability

  • hot flashes, hot flushes, including night sweats
  • sleep disturbances

Menopause- Urogenital atrophy

  • itching
  • dryness
  • bleeding
  • urinary frequency
  • urinary urgency
  • urinary incontinence

Menopause-Skin, soft tissue

  • breast atrophy
  • skin thinning
  • decreased elasticity

Menopause- Psychological

  • mood disturbance
  • irritability
  • fatigue
  • memory loss
  • depression

Menopause- Skeletal

  • osteoporosis
  • joint pain, muscle pain
  • back pain

Menopause- Sexual

  • decreased libido
  • vaginal dryness
  • problems reaching orgasm
  • dyspareunia

Menopause

A drop in your estrogens levels can cause you to lose bone mass, but you can easily counter this by exercising your bones. Before the onset of menopause, ovaries of the ladies secrete sex hormones (estrogen). During menopause this estrogen which is continuously circulating in the blood gets reduced to the significant extent. Because of the reduction in the level of estrogen the pituitary gland in the brain has to secrets more gonadotrophin hormones maintaining the balance in the body.

Premature menopause (or premature ovarian failure) is defined as menopause occurring before the age of 40; it occurs in 1% of women. some women enter menopause at a younger age, especially if they have had cancer or another serious illness and undergone chemotherapy. Other causes of premature menopause include autoimmune disorders, thyroid disease, and diabetes mellitus. Premature menopause is diagnosed by measuring the levels of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH); the levels of these hormones will be higher if menopause has occurred. Rates of premature menopause have been found to be significantly higher in fraternal and identical twins; approximately 5% of twins reach menopause before the age of 40. The reasons for this are not completely understood. Transplants of ovarian tissue between identical twins have been successful in restoring fertility.

One of the foremost menopause symptoms seems to be weight gain and a change in the overall shape of your body. Though you may not be so happy about this, it is important to keep in mind that this weight gain is normal and to be expected.

Reports show that, the 80 % of ladies who are approaching menopause suffer from uneasiness, lot of perspiration and unnatural bodily heat. This uneasiness and hotness is felt because the proportion of estrogen has decreased. Such uneasiness persists every time from half a minute to five minutes. This feeling of heat and perspiration results from chemical changes that take place inside the body when perspiration evaporates; one also feels trembling due to cold.

Some women easily adopt the changes with no discomfort, while others feel uncomfortable and often unwelcome sensations as their body adjusts to a new chemical balance.

Considering menopause can last for five years you will probably want to do everything you can to minimize the unpleasantness. Yoga keeps body and mind in sound health. Ladies practicing yoga practice from their middle-age period they hardly notice the onset as well as the passing away of the menopause period. Yoga can help to alleviate or eliminate many of the sometimes-uncomfortable physical and emotional feelings associated with menopause.

Complementary and alternative therapies

In the area of complementary and alternative therapies, acupuncture treatment is promising. Some studies have noted a slight benefit from soy isoflavones.

Yoga treatment During Menopause

Asana

Inverted postures and Pranayama are particularly helpful of hot flashes because they cool the body and fill it with energy and life force.

Therapeutics Yoganidra

YogaNidra is a state of conscious Deep Sleep. YogaNidra brings an incredible calmness, quietness and clarity. It has great Therapeutics values.

Diet for Menopause

Include

Fresh fruits and vegetables.

Milk — maintain the level of calcium in the body.

Drink lot of water that will stabilize the effects caused by the liquid discharge out of the glands.

Reduce the intake of salt in food.

Obviously following measures gives relief, such as drinking cold liquids and removing excess clothing layers when hot flashes strike, and avoiding hot flash triggers such as spicy foods, may supplement or supplant the use of medications/ treatment for some women.

Botanical (herbs/ herbal) and other dietary supplements can interact with prescription and over-the-counter drugs, affecting how the body reacts.

Note

If the effect of menopause is very serious or in greater proportion, doctors give estrogen in such conditions for hormonal replacement therapy; but such a treatment makes ladies prone to cancer of breast or uterus.

More information on Menopause

Menopause in other species-Unlike humans, other animals rarely experience menopause. This may simply be due to their comparatively shorter lifespans.

Andropause- is a medical phenomenon, similar to the female menopause, that can affect men between the ages of 40 and 55.Key Points
* Many women have few or no symptoms related to menopause, or feel that their symptoms are not enough of a problem that they need to seek treatment. Some symptoms traditionally seen as menopausal may be related to aging in general.
* Menopause should not be viewed as a disease, according to the SoS conference panel.
* For many years, menopausal hormone therapy (MHT; in the past, it was called hormone replacement therapy or HRT) was the primary treatment for troubling menopausal symptoms. Recent studies have found increased risks, however, for certain serious health problems from prolonged use of MHT.
* Women with severe or long-lasting symptoms of menopause that have not been adequately relieved in other ways should consult their health care providers about their personal risks and benefits for using MHT. Certain lifestyle changes can also be helpful.
* There is very little high-quality scientific evidence about the effectiveness and long-term safety of CAM therapies for menopausal symptoms. More research is needed.
* It is very important for women who are considering or using CAM therapies for any health concern to discuss them with their health care provider physicians, doctors. This is to help ensure safety and a comprehensive treatment plan.
